Great opportunities exist in Mancos in the Transfer Recreation Area and Echo Basin area. These areas are also open to touring XC skiing. Both areas are non plowed forest service roads that are groomed by the local snowmobile group frequently to provide better access for skiers, bikers, and dog sledding. Both areas of groomed trails for a combined 60+ miles of riding. These areas are not groomed like Nordic ski areas so expect some soft conditions at some point. Be aware that both of these areas are lightly traveled during the winter and that the likelihood of coming across someone is very slim.  The water spigot at Transfer campground is typically shut off in mid October.
