The Owen Basin Trail is a best accessed from FS 556A in Echo Basin. Follow 556A until it dead ends at a gate. Take the jeep road downhill about 1 mile until you see a sign for Owen Basin Trail. Follow this trail across the forks of the West Mancos River until you reach a large meadow. Go right at the trail intersection. This stretch is considered the West Mancos Trail and is open to motorized use. After roughly 1/4 mile look for a a split in the trail. Go right to follow the Owen Basin Trail. It is a 6 mile hike out and back (8 miles if starting from 556A). This is a great hike to do in the summertime as it is well shaded, just be careful in early summer when crossing the forks of the West Mancos as it can be treacherous. Fall foliage in this area is fantastic.
